Books

Peak: Secrets from the New Science of Expertise by Anders Ericsson (Amazon, Hoopla) - explains deliberate practice as the main tool for attaining mastery or expertise; through repeated practice, deep focus, and immediate feedback by a mentor or expert in the field. Ericsson also disproves the concept of the 10,000 rule, which states that mastery is attained after 10,000 hours of practice.

The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion by Jonathan Haidt (Amazon, Hoopla) - Outlines our moral foundations as individuals and how they inform the decisions we make every day. This book is incredibly important during this time of sociopolitical polarization. I have found that I am more sympathetic to opposing views, even when I do not agree with them.

The Social Photograph: On Photography and Social Media by Nathan Jurgenson (Amazon) - how the smartphone has remade the world through selfies, food photos, and the dramatic increase shift of sharing photos on social media.

Musicking: The Meaning of Performing and Listening by Christopher Smalls (Amazon) - "Being with friends, hanging out, is one of my favorite things about being a musician is engaging with the art world. Musicking outlines the ritual practice of concertizing and analyses what western art music. All of the components of attending performances is gone now." - Kory

Seven Days in the Art World by Sarah Thornton (Amazon, Hoopla) - "There is a chapter in this book where the author sat in an art critique at CalArts, that was around 24 hours long. They just sat in a room all day and critiqued each other’s work. I want to do that. That sounds awesome! I wish we could engage critically like that more often." - Kory

The Intangibilities of Form: Skill and Deskilling After the Readymade by John Roberts (Amazon) - “I’m really excited to read this book. It is a really interesting question: what is a skill in a readymade sculpture? Have you ever really thought about this with music? I think the more and more you engage with this informs the way you make stuff” - Kory

Music

Dive, Awake, and Epoch by Tycho. “I like whole records as opposed to individual songs. How he constructs his music as whole records as opposed to individual songs I think makes the whole process a little bit more rewarding…As I whole I think these 3 records work really well. They flow.” - Kory

Cosmogramma by Flying Lotus - "This was one #1 record of the 2010s for my ‘in the decade personal review.’ It’s this beautiful whole piece of art. production porn. Artistically interesting. I would recommend to anyone." - Kory

To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrik Lamar - ”I definitely think of it as a long-form piece, There are extractable bits, like ‘Alright’ and ‘The Blacker the Berry’ are great things to extract, but as a whole record it has this through-line narrative.” - Kory
